The double snug piercing

By Robin Jehanno, piercing specialist at Solstice Bijoux.

Love stacking your jewellery? Already have a snug piercing and would like a second? Or a third?

At Solstice, we love original, delicate ear stacks with a personal feel. We're passionate about ear piercing jewellery and here to help you choose.

A snug ear piercing passes horizontally through the ear cartilage. It may be possible to have more than one piercing in this area.

Let's explore this distinctive piercing together!

Double and triple snug piercings

As you may already know, a snug piercing passes horizontally through the ear, above the conch and opposite the ear canal. It sits on the same fold of cartilage as the rook, but further towards the outer ear.

It's an uncommon but stylish piercing that pairs well with helix and tragus piercings.

Depending on your ear anatomy, a double snug may be an option after assessment by your piercer. Jewellery dimensions must be appropriate, as explained in the APP's criteria for initial piercing jewellery. This piercing needs careful placement. Solstice catalogue jewellery is intended for healed piercings.

If you decide to wear two pieces of jewellery in your snug, curved barbells are usually the most practical choice, and we have a soft spot for gold-tone designs. Hoops can be harder to stack in this area, especially if you have several piercings.

A double snug piercing pairs well with an upper helix hoop, studs and simple lobe earrings. You could even wear a tragus stud or a rook hoop.

A triple snug piercing is less common, and we haven't come across one ourselves. In any case, too many pieces of jewellery can overwhelm such a small area of cartilage. Even stacking can have too much of a good thing!

Before considering several piercings, you need to locate the snug and assess the space available. This demonstration on an ear highlights the importance of anatomy, without showing a double piercing.

Alternatives and other piercing options

If you decide against a double snug piercing, you could consider other placements that offer a different look and can be just as stylish.

A conch piercing is nearby and offers a similar option. It can give you more room to stack jewellery while adding rounded shapes and structure to your ear stack. Depending on your anatomy, it can suit a hoop or a stud once healed.

Prefer something classic? Choose a helix piercing! Timeless, modern and stylish, the helix lends itself well to stacking. Small hoops worn along the cartilage rim are subtle and pretty. The lower helix sits on the lower part of the ear, close to the snug. It's a good alternative.
