A rook piercing sits in a fairly thick fold of cartilage, just above the daith and not far from the helix. It's a distinctive placement, but it can be painful and slow to heal. Healing can take many months and varies from person to person. Daily aftercare and a few practical precautions can support the process, although faster healing is not guaranteed.

Let's go!
How long does a rook piercing take to heal?
A rook piercing sits towards the centre of the ear, beside the antihelix and above the daith. An uncommon placement, the rook is one of the more distinctive and fashionable piercings because it sits in a fold of cartilage. It can also take longer to heal than a standard helix or lobe piercing.

A rook piercing can take many months to heal. Even if it feels better sooner, that does not mean it is fully healed yet. Fortunately, some practical measures can support healing (we'll discuss them in the next section).
Healing is rarely linear. Redness, swelling, tenderness and crusting can come and go while the piercing settles.Â
A calmer-looking piercing can be a reassuring sign, but it does not confirm that it is fully healed. Ask your piercer to check before changing your jewellery. Once your piercing is fully healed, you can choose one of our designs for healed rook piercings. If you struggle to remove your initial jewellery, ask your piercer for help.
Healing time alone doesn't tell the whole story: this account of a rook piercing discusses discomfort during sleep and everyday challenges.
How can you help a rook piercing heal?
Now that you've had your piercing, you're probably wondering how to help your rook heal. A consistent routine can support healing. Discuss the following aftercare with your piercer from the first day after the procedure:
- Follow your piercer's cleaning instructions, using saline solution and a clean compress if recommended
- Do not touch your piercing with dirty hands, including during aftercare, and avoid touching it unnecessarily
- Avoid swimming or soaking the piercing, and use a shower cap only if it does not press on or catch it
- Take care to avoid snagging it on clothing or hair, or during sport
- Always go to a professional piercer for cartilage piercings!
A note on cleaning: this TikTok explains why regularly removing your jewellery for aftercare can complicate healing.

Do not apply essential oils to a healing piercing. Avoid pressure and unnecessary handling, as explained in the APP aftercare recommendations.
Finally, if a bump appears during healing, ask a qualified piercer to assess it rather than trying to treat it yourself. Do not try to pierce the bump, and check that your jewellery is not too tight.
These tips can support your rook piercing's healing, although they cannot guarantee a trouble-free recovery.
