How painful is a snug piercing?

By Robin Jehanno, piercing specialist at Solstice Bijoux.

Would you like a snug piercing but worry it might hurt? Is your cartilage still painful after several weeks?

Then you're in the right place! At Solstice Bijoux, we're passionate about body art and the world of piercing.

Located in the middle of the ear, the snug is an uncommon but versatile piercing that can accommodate a range of jewellery styles. A snug piercing can be quite painful, as it passes through a thick fold of cartilage.

In this article, you'll discover:

  • What happens during a cartilage piercing
  • How to ease snug piercing pain
  • Opinions and personal experiences

Let's get started!

Does a snug ear piercing hurt?

A snug ear piercing sits on the same cartilage fold as a rook, but in the middle of the ear. This is a fold of cartilage between the conch and the helix, opposite the ear canal.

One advantage of the snug is its versatility. For healed piercings, we recommend curved barbells and hoops to vary your ear stacks. It pairs well with helix and lobe piercings. But does it hurt?

What a snug piercing feels like and how much it hurts

A snug piercing passes through a fold of cartilage and can cause an intense pinching sensation. Everyone experiences it differently; a fixed score out of 10 cannot predict your experience (see the IASP definition of pain).

As with any piercing, what you feel depends largely on your sensitivity and pain tolerance. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is your personal pain tolerance?
  • Is this your first piercing?
  • What do you expect from the experience?
  • Are you expecting it to hurt?

If this is your first piercing, the procedure is straightforward. Your piercer disinfects your skin and marks the placement of your future piercing. They pierce the cartilage with a needle, insert the jewellery and clean the wound.

The piercing itself takes just a few seconds, and the area can still feel sore afterwards. Some tenderness, redness and swelling can happen early on, but worsening symptoms should not be dismissed.

Opinions and personal experiences

We've gathered a few personal accounts of snug ear piercings. Here they are:

  • “Pain is the question that keeps coming up. Based on my own experience, I'd give it 2.5/5. It's not a pleasant feeling, and it took me by surprise; the tingling sensation is strange. It's quick, nothing to worry about.”
  • “Yes, it hurt on the day. Even though it still hurts now when I accidentally touch it [
] the pain from my snug ear piercing is really manageable. So girls, go for it!”
  • “You just feel a needle going through your ear, like with any piercing. The pain is more likely to come afterwards. Personally, I was in a lot of pain afterwards.”

How can you ease snug piercing pain?

Although a snug piercing can be quite painful, it may be possible to ease the pain. There's no magic solution, but here are a few tips that may help you approach your next piercing with more confidence.

Our tips before and after a snug piercing

The first step is to choose your piercer carefully. Avoid jewellery shops and home piercing: quality matters. Choose a professional studio piercer who meets the applicable local requirements for ear and body piercing. Look closely at customer reviews and feedback, visit to speak to the piercer and assess the studio: is it clean? Do you feel confident in it?

Before your snug piercing, eat a substantial meal and get enough sleep. This can help you feel well prepared. If you're particularly anxious or sensitive, discuss the procedure with your piercer beforehand.

Remember to tie your hair back securely. You can meditate or listen to music to relax. Our tip: bring someone with you.

The area may still feel sore after the procedure, so take care not to catch or irritate it afterwards.

Follow your piercer's aftercare advice carefully to help limit irritation: avoid pressure on the area and do not touch the jewellery unnecessarily.

Continuing the precautions after piercing, this video focuses on contact during sleep and pressure on the jewellery.

What should you do if your ear is still painful?

If the area becomes more painful, more swollen or starts discharging, seek medical advice promptly. Leave the jewellery in place unless a doctor tells you otherwise. See the signs of infection described by the NHS.
