    Your rook piercing questions

What size should I choose for my rook jewellery?

Here are some guidelines for choosing jewellery for a healed piercing, adapted to your ear. Your piercer determines the dimensions for initial piercing jewellery.

    Size guide - rook
Jewellery / measurementGuideChoosing the right fit
Curved Barbells Often 7 to 8 mm wearable lengthLeave space around the fold without compressing it.
Hoop 6 to 8 mm inner diameterThe diameter must leave room for the cartilage prominence.
Post thickness Often 1.2 mmKeep the thickness suited to your piercing.

Measure a hoop’s diameter on the inside, and a post’s wearable length between its functional ends, excluding the decorative element. Compare with jewellery that already fits you and have the measurement confirmed if you are unsure.

For more advice, see our rook guide.

The 8 mm of BĂ©rĂ©nice measures the usable bar length. For Avril, the measurement is the hoop’s inner diameter: often 6 to 8 mm for a rook, to be checked on your ear by a piercer. These measurements are not interchangeable.

Print at 100%. Check the 50 mm line, then compare with a hoop that already fits you.

What type of jewellery suits the rook?

A curved barbell, a small curved bar, naturally follows the rook fold. A hoop may also be suitable once the piercing has healed and its size has been checked. Two small ends create a delicate look; a hoop draws a more visible curve. The right choice leaves enough room for the cartilage.

How long does a rook piercing take to heal?

Allow 6 to 9 months, sometimes longer, for this cartilage piercing to heal. The time depends on your ear and everyday snagging and pressure. An absence of pain is not enough to confirm healing: your piercer can check its progress before a jewellery change.

How painful is a rook piercing?

A rook piercing passes through a thick cartilage fold: the procedure can feel intense, with a brief sharp sensation followed by pressure. Pain is very personal; a score out of ten cannot predict how you will feel.

You may hear sounds from the procedure close to your ear, but this does not mean the cartilage is cracking. Your piercer checks your anatomy and guides you through each step.

When can I change my initial rook piercing jewellery?

Wait until your rook piercing is fully healed before replacing your initial jewellery with a decorative design. Even if your ear looks healed on the surface, the piercing channel may still be fragile.

If you are unsure, ask your piercer to confirm. Our jewellery is designed for piercings that have already healed.

When can I sleep on my rook piercing?

Avoid sleeping directly on your rook piercing while it is healing. A pillow with a hole, with your ear resting in the opening, may help reduce pressure.

Once healed, you can resume if contact remains comfortable and puts no pressure on the jewellery. Do not rotate the hoop to test whether it has healed: an absence of pain alone does not confirm healing.

How should I care for a rook piercing and support healing?

Wash your hands before aftercare. Use a sterile saline wound wash containing 0.9 % sodium chloride, then gently dry with a clean disposable gauze pad. Do not rotate the jewellery, and avoid alcohol, essential oils and friction. If pain increases, redness spreads or you develop a fever, seek medical advice promptly.

Choose a non-woven gauze pad rather than cotton wool or cotton buds to reduce fibres that may catch on the jewellery.

Can my ear accommodate a rook piercing? Do I have the right anatomy?

It depends on your anatomy: you need a sufficiently developed, well-positioned cartilage fold. A piercer assesses your ear rather than relying on a jewellery photo alone. If a rook is not suitable, a flat piercing may offer another beautiful point of light higher on the ear, depending on your anatomy.

What material do you use? Is your piercing jewellery hypoallergenic?

Our piercing jewellery is made from hypoallergenic titanium. Our jewellery has undergone laboratory testing. You'll find the material, finish and dimensions on each product page to help you choose your piece with confidence.

Should I choose the gold-tone or silver-tone finish?

Gold-tone brings warmth to your ear stack; the white-gold-coloured finish gives it bright, light reflections with a chrome-like appearance. This describes the colour: the base material is still titanium. A styling tip: bluish or purplish veins may point towards cool tones, while greenish veins may point towards gold-tone. It's a styling guide, not a rule: try both near your face in natural light.

Why choose titanium rather than 925 silver or stainless steel?

Hypoallergenic and nickel-free, our titanium is laboratory-tested. It is resistant to the darkening associated with 925 silver, resistant to rust and highly resistant to tarnishing. It is designed to retain its shine over time with everyday wear, including showering or exercising, when worn in healed piercings. After swimming in the sea, rinse your jewellery with fresh water and dry it thoroughly.

How should I care for my piercing jewellery?

After removing your jewellery, clean it with lukewarm water and a little mild soap, rinse, then dry with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive products and cosmetics.

Is the piercing jewellery sold individually?

Choose piercing jewellery individually to build your ear stack freely. For earrings, check the product page to see whether the design is sold individually or as a pair.

Can I wear your jewellery to sleep?

Yes, in a healed piercing and with well-fitting jewellery. The jewellery must not cause pressure or discomfort during the night. While the piercing is healing, avoid sleeping directly on it.

Can I shower or exercise wearing your jewellery?

Yes, for healed piercings. Our titanium jewellery is resistant to rust and highly resistant to tarnishing. Its EverGold coating is designed to help preserve its shine and colour over time with everyday wear.

After showering or exercising, rinse your jewellery if necessary and dry it thoroughly. For activities where jewellery could snag or be pulled, choose a suitable jewellery arrangement.

Can I return jewellery if I don't like how it looks on me?

You have 30 days after receipt to request a return.

How can I build an ear stack with a rook piercing?

A rook adds contrast and depth to an ear stack. With a small curved barbell, the two ends create a delicate duo high on the ear. Pair it with a hoop in your helix and a touch of light at the tragus to spread the details across your ear.

Prefer a rook hoop? Let it become the small focal point of this area. Simpler jewellery in the lobe extends your ear stack without overcrowding it. If you also have a daith or anti-helix piercing, make sure the pieces do not touch.

So, hoop or curved barbell? Imagine the look from the front and the side: the rook plays with your ear’s natural contours. A shared finish creates a harmonious line; just one brighter piece can create a beautiful contrast.

A rook hoop, a touch of roundness

Graceful and delicate, a hoop adds depth to this cartilage fold. It can stay understated or draw more attention with a bright decorative detail. As the rook sits further inside the ear, the diameter must leave room for the surrounding contours.

A smaller hoop will not necessarily be more comfortable. Your ear’s shape and the piercing’s position determine the fit; the FAQ brings together the measurements to check.

The curved barbell, a distinctive design

A curved barbell is particularly suited to the rook’s shape. With two subtle ends, it creates a soft look; crystal details give it a bolder touch. It can also complement conch or helix jewellery, with a little space between the pieces.

Check the wearable length between the ends and the bar thickness. These determine the fit, beyond how the jewellery looks in a photo.

    What is a rook piercing?

A rook piercing passes through a cartilage fold in the upper inner ear, above the daith. This contour gives it its distinctive look. The fold must be sufficiently pronounced: your piercer checks your anatomy before considering this placement.
