    Your snug piercing questions

What size should I choose for my snug jewellery?

Here are some guidelines for choosing jewellery for a healed piercing, adapted to your ear. Your piercer determines the dimensions for initial piercing jewellery.

    Size guide - snug
Jewellery / measurementGuideChoosing the right fit
Curved Barbells 8 to 10 mmHave the length confirmed according to your ear’s contours.
Hoop Only after checking the shape and diameter8 to 10 mm may suit some snug piercings; the curve and available space remain the deciding factors.
Post thickness 1.2 mmThickness of the jewellery in this selection; have its suitability for your piercing checked.

Measure a hoop’s diameter on the inside, and a post’s wearable length between its functional ends, excluding the decorative element. Compare with jewellery that already fits you and have the measurement confirmed if you are unsure.

For more advice, see our snug guide.

What type of jewellery suits the snug?

A small curved barbell is frequently used in a snug piercing. Its length and curve must follow your anatomy. A hoop is only an option if the placement, healing and available space allow; have the fit checked before choosing one.

How long does a snug piercing take to heal?

A snug piercing generally takes 9 to 12 months to heal. It passes through a particularly thick area of cartilage, which explains why healing often takes longer than for other ear piercings.

Avoid pressure and snagging during this time, and wait until your piercing has fully healed before changing your jewellery.

This timeframe is a guide and healing may take longer. Ask your piercer to confirm that your piercing has healed.

    Does a snug piercing hurt?

This fold of cartilage can make the piercing feel more intense than a lobe piercing. The sensation is very personal: a score out of ten cannot predict how it will feel for you. Your piercer will guide you and check that your anatomy allows for a suitable placement.

When can I change the initial jewellery in my snug piercing?

A snug piercing often takes 9 to 12 months to heal, sometimes longer. Wait until it has fully healed, as confirmed by your piercer, before replacing your initial jewellery with a decorative piece.

If the bar length needs adjusting during healing, have your piercer make the adjustment.

I've just had my snug pierced: how can I support healing and avoid complications?

Wash your hands before aftercare. Clean with a sterile wound-care saline solution containing 0.9 % sodium chloride, then dry gently with a clean disposable gauze pad, preferably non-woven. Choose this rather than cotton wool or cotton buds to reduce fibres that can catch on the jewellery.

Do not rotate the jewellery, and minimise handling, pressure and snagging. Avoid sleeping on the piercing while it heals, as well as alcohol and irritating products. Gentle aftercare supports healing; doing it more often does not speed up the process.

If pain increases, redness spreads or you develop a fever, seek medical advice promptly.

Is a snug suitable as a first piercing?

It requires suitable anatomy and careful follow-up: it is often more demanding than a lobe piercing. If this is your first piercing, discuss your sleeping habits, wearing headphones or a helmet, and healing time with your piercer. They can suggest a simpler placement if needed.

What material do you use? Is your piercing jewellery hypoallergenic?

Our piercing jewellery is made from hypoallergenic titanium. Our jewellery has undergone laboratory testing. You'll find the material, finish and dimensions on each product page to help you choose your piece with confidence.

Should I choose the gold-tone or silver-tone finish?

One little tip is to look at the colour of your veins: if they appear more blue or purple, silver-tone jewellery may suit you well; if they look greener, try gold-tone jewellery.

This is not a fixed rule. What matters most is choosing the finish you feel best in.

How do you build an ear stack with a snug piercing?

The snug adds dimension to the middle of your ear. With a small curved barbell, its two ends already create a lovely rhythm: you do not need a large decorative detail to make it stand out. A hoop in your helix can carry this movement upwards.

For a brighter ear stack, pairing several pieces of jewellery, add a small stud to your tragus and flexible or rounded jewellery to your lobe. Vary the shapes and sizes while keeping one detail in common. A matching finish can easily bring the look together.

If you have a conch or daith piercing, look at how much room the jewellery takes up in the centre: the pieces must not touch. You can combine them freely, provided you respect this space. The snug remains your ear's distinctive little detail, without needing to fill every gap.

Visualise your combinations in the Solstice Ear Stack Builder and explore our ear stacks to find your starting point. You can try different looks, move pieces and refine the proportions before choosing your jewellery.

The curved barbell, a delicate shape for the snug

A curved barbell consists of a curved bar and two ends. A smooth finish creates an understated look; a sparkling detail adds a more precious feel. Choose the curve and length before the decorative detail.

A length of 8 to 10 mm is a guide for the jewellery in this selection, but this fold varies considerably from one ear to another. Have your measurements confirmed: jewellery that is too short can compress the tissue, while jewellery that is too long may snag.

A hoop for your snug piercing, an option that needs careful fitting

A hoop adds a rounded line to the cartilage and can create a lovely contrast with studs. In a snug piercing, however, it needs particularly careful fitting. You cannot simply choose the same diameter as the hoop you wear in your helix.

If your piercer confirms that this shape suits you, choose a decorative detail in proportion to the contours of your ear. Even a simple hoop can make a strong impression in this placement.

    What is a snug piercing?

A snug piercing passes horizontally through the raised fold of cartilage just inside the ear's outer rim, in its middle section. It differs from a conch piercing, which sits in the central hollow. This fold must be sufficiently developed; not every ear is suitable for this piercing.
