What does the Bible say about piercings?

By Robin Jehanno, piercing specialist at Solstice Bijoux.

You’re thinking about getting a piercing or a tattoo, but you’re not entirely sure. Here’s an overview of how some Christians approach the question.

The meaning of ear piercings differs considerably across beliefs and cultures. In this article, we’ll explore views of piercings and tattoos in relation to the Bible.

What to know about piercings and tattoos in the Bible

Piercing is not a recent practice; it dates back to ancient times. It has been used to mark membership of a group or as body decoration. Although it is not a new subject, some believers still wonder whether wearing piercings might offend God.

Some interpretations of the Bible regard piercings as signs of moral corruption or immoral self-expression, drawing on certain verses. This is not a view shared by all Christians.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 describes the body as God’s temple, where the Holy Spirit dwells. Some readers interpret this passage as a reminder to keep the body sacred and avoid ornaments worn to appear more attractive; that interpretation is not an explicit prohibition of jewellery in the verse.

Within this interpretation, believers are encouraged to focus on inner character rather than outward appearance.

A tattoo is a design on the body representing a symbol or decoration, sometimes marking a happy or painful event, or simply expressing individuality.

The Bible includes a prohibition on tattoo marks in Leviticus 19:28, where God commands the people of Israel not to mark their bodies.

Some believers understand this message as applying beyond the people of Israel to anyone considering a tattoo. In that reading, remembering that the body is God’s temple means taking care not to dishonour it.

The difference between piercings, tattoos and Christian jewellery

Many believers wear Christian jewellery, such as cross earrings, religious rings and cross pendants.

Such jewellery is accepted in some Christian traditions and is used symbolically, although practices and meanings vary between communities.

In contrast with piercings or tattoos, cross jewellery may be viewed favourably in some Christian communities, though views vary.

What do biblical passages say about this?

Some readings of scripture view piercings and tattoos as conflicting with biblical teaching. Although many Christians wear piercings or have tattoos, not all believers interpret these passages in the same way.

However, this does not mean that a believer cannot make a personal choice. Someone who seeks to live faithfully can still remain committed to their faith.

Ultimately, choosing a piercing or a tattoo is a personal decision. Believers may also consider the teachings of their own tradition when deciding how to practise their faith and understand God’s gifts.
