Flat Piercing Jewellery

For a flat piercing, a flat-back stud, often with a 6 to 8 mm post, is usually the best choice, adjusted to the thickness of your cartilage. Our hypoallergenic titanium flat jewellery lets the decorative detail stand out: a subtle sparkle or a more defined motif to bring light to the top of your ear.

    Your flat piercing questions

What size should I choose for my flat piercing?

Here are some guidelines for choosing jewellery for a healed piercing, adapted to your ear. Your piercer determines the dimensions for initial piercing jewellery.

    Size guide - flat
Jewellery / measurementGuideChoosing the right fit
Stud / labret Often 6 to 8 mm wearable lengthSome ears need a shorter post, measured by the piercer.
Post thickness Often 1.2 mmMatch your piercing's existing thickness.
Decorative end Depends on the available spaceCheck that it touches neither the rim of your ear nor another piece of jewellery.
Hoop No standard diameter to recommendA labret stud is generally more suitable for this flat area.

A hoop's diameter is measured on the inside; a post's wearable length is measured between its functional ends, excluding the decorative detail. Compare it with jewellery that already fits you and have the measurement confirmed if you're unsure.

For more information, see our flat piercing guide.

Two designs can have the same post length but take up very different amounts of space. Try on your glasses: the arm must not press against the back or the decorative front of the jewellery.

What type of jewellery suits a flat piercing?

A flat-back labret stud is generally the most suitable choice for a flat piercing. Do not wear hoops in this area.

How long does a flat piercing take to heal?

Allow 6 to 9 months, sometimes longer, for this cartilage piercing to heal. The time depends on your ear and everyday snagging and pressure. An absence of pain is not enough to confirm healing: your piercer can check its progress before a jewellery change.

Does getting a flat piercing hurt?

The piercing passes through cartilage, so brief pain and tenderness afterwards are possible. The sensation varies greatly from person to person, with no universal score out of ten. Choose a piercer who takes time to explain the procedure and assess your anatomy.

When can I change my initial flat jewellery?

Don't rely solely on how your ear looks. Even if your flat piercing is no longer red or tender, healing may not be complete.

Before switching to decorative jewellery, have your piercing checked by your piercer.

How should I care for a flat piercing?

To support healing, avoid touching or handling your flat piercing unnecessarily. Take care with hair, glasses, clothing and earbuds that could snag it.

Clean the area with saline solution, then gently dry it with a clean gauze pad. Avoid cotton wool and cotton buds, which can leave small fibres around the piercing.

Can I wear glasses with a flat piercing?

Yes, if the arm of your glasses does not touch the jewellery. Wear your glasses to the appointment so your piercer can check where they sit behind your ear. Avoid pressure while the piercing is healing; afterwards, a well-fitting post helps limit snagging.

What material do you use? Is your piercing jewellery hypoallergenic?

Our piercing jewellery is made from hypoallergenic titanium. Our jewellery has undergone laboratory testing. You'll find the material, finish and dimensions on each product page to help you choose your piece with confidence.

Should I choose the gold-tone or silver-tone finish?

It depends on the look you like. Gold-tone adds warmth, while silver-tone creates a brighter, cooler effect.

You can also take your cue from the jewellery you already wear most often. If your ear stack combines several pieces, keeping the same finish generally helps create a more harmonious look.

Why choose titanium rather than 925 silver or stainless steel?

Hypoallergenic and nickel-free, our titanium is laboratory-tested. It is resistant to the darkening associated with 925 silver, resistant to rust and highly resistant to tarnishing. It is designed to retain its shine over time with everyday wear, including showering or exercising, when worn in healed piercings. After swimming in the sea, rinse your jewellery with fresh water and dry it thoroughly.

Can I shower or exercise wearing your jewellery?

Yes, for healed piercings. Our titanium jewellery is resistant to rust and highly resistant to tarnishing. Its EverGold coating is designed to help preserve its shine and colour over time with everyday wear.

After showering or exercising, rinse your jewellery if necessary and dry it thoroughly. For activities where jewellery could snag or be pulled, choose a suitable jewellery arrangement.

Can I return jewellery if I don't like how it looks on me?

You have 30 days after receipt to request a return.

Is the piercing jewellery sold individually?

Choose piercing jewellery individually for greater freedom and creativity when building your ear stack.

Can I wear your jewellery to sleep?

Yes, in a healed flat piercing and with a well-fitting post. Flat-back studs are designed for comfort; they must still not cause pressure or discomfort. While the piercing is healing, avoid sleeping directly on it.

Why do our studs have flat backs?

Traditional butterfly backs can feel uncomfortable when you sleep, exercise or wear your jewellery all day.

That's why we've chosen flat backs, designed to offer greater comfort and feel barely noticeable when worn.

How do I build an ear stack with a flat piercing?

The flat is a lovely place for a detail that catches the eye: a small flower, a light-catching motif or a line of crystals. If you like delicate jewellery, give it a little space and pair it with a fine hoop at the helix.

Prefer a fuller ear stack? Echo the flat's motif with a small piece at the tragus, then add volume at the lobe. The shapes can differ: a shared finish or sparkle is enough to bring them together.

The right balance depends on your ear, rather than a maximum number of piercings. An elongated stud top (the decorative detail) takes up more space than a tiny point of light.

Visualise your combinations in the Solstice Ear Stack Builder and explore our ear stacks to find your starting point. You can try, move and refine the proportions before choosing your jewellery.

The stud, a favourite for flat piercings

From subtle to distinctive, a stud adds something extra to an ear stack. Its straight post holds a decorative end; a labret has a flat back. Check the fastening system on the product page: it can vary between designs.

Rounded motifs create a soft look, while a more elongated shape follows the line of the cartilage. Small crystals catch the light and pair beautifully with simpler hoops at the lobe or helix.

    Why choose a flat piercing?

The flat sits in the flat area of cartilage at the top of the ear, inside the helix rim. Its name comes from this flat surface. It's an interesting placement for showing off a motif without wrapping a hoop around the cartilage.

It can complement a helix, conch or tragus, depending on the available space. Your piercer also considers the arms of your glasses and the position of the piercing when choosing a comfortable placement.
