Flat piercing: the ultimate guide

By Robin Jehanno, piercing specialist at Solstice Bijoux.

The flat is the flat area of cartilage at the top of the ear; the helix follows its outer rim. A stud highlights this area if your anatomy allows it to be pierced. Before deciding, allow for several months of healing and follow-up appointments with your piercer.

What is a flat ear piercing?

This piercing takes its name from the word “flat”, which describes the shape of the cartilage in this area.

Flat piercing placement

The flat is the flat area at the top of the outer ear, inside the rim of the helix. Your piercer checks the available space and the angle that suits your ear.

Several studs can form an ear stack in this area if your anatomy allows. Discuss the number of piercings and their spacing before your appointment.

To help you picture this placement, this TikTok shows where the flat sits and how it differs from the outer conch. It then covers jewellery, the piercing procedure and the budget to allow.

Prices and costs

What is included varies from studio to studio. Ask about the cost of the procedure, the initial jewellery, follow-up appointments and any adjustments.

Studio HĂ©lix lists a flat piercing at 40 €, including the procedure, initial titanium jewellery and follow-up care. La Fine Aiguille lists a flat piercing from 55 €. These are two indicative prices from French studios checked on 6 October 2026, not a market-wide average.

The price varies according to the studio, its location, the service and the jewellery provided. When comparing quotes, check the material of the initial jewellery, follow-up appointments and any additional fees. The starting price alone is not enough: ask what is included and how the professional arranges follow-up care.

Flat piercing pain

The piercing procedure may cause a brief pinch, followed by local tenderness. If the pain increases after your appointment, do not automatically assume it is a normal stage of healing.

Talk to your piercer about any concerns: they can explain the procedure and adjust the pace of the appointment.

Cartilage thickness alone cannot predict how it will feel for you or rank piercings from least to most painful. You may also like: flat piercing pain.

Pain is personal, so a universal pain score would be misleading (see the IASP definition of pain).

Ear piercing: the procedure and preparation

If the flat will be your first cartilage piercing, take time to prepare for your appointment. You can ask questions about the procedure, how it may feel and aftercare before deciding. This preparation can help you feel more at ease, without guaranteeing less pain or faster healing.

Where should you get your ears pierced?

Choose a piercer who explains their procedure, uses sterile equipment and a single-use needle, and provides follow-up care.

To help you choose, check reviews and customer feedback. Ask people you know and feel free to speak with the piercer. They should help you feel confident before your piercing. Their studio should be clean and well maintained, and the equipment used must be sterilised.

How should you prepare for a flat piercing?

Follow the studio's instructions: eat normally, stay hydrated and arrive well rested. Tell them about any medication you take and any health conditions.

Tie back long hair to keep your ears clear. If you have ever felt faint during a treatment, let your piercer know.

Do not use medication or numbing cream for the piercing on your own initiative. Ask a healthcare professional and the studio for advice, without stopping any prescribed treatment.

Simple ways to feel calmer can help: focus on slow breathing, listen to music or bring someone with you if the studio allows it.

At Solstice, we specialise in ear jewellery. This guide helps you prepare your questions about the flat and choose your ear stack, combining several pieces of jewellery.

For your budget, here are two indicative examples from French studios checked on 6 October 2026: a flat piercing at 40 € at Studio HĂ©lix and from 55 € at La Fine Aiguille. Pain is personal: thin cartilage does not guarantee a piercing with little pain. You may also like: flat piercing jewellery.

Aftercare routine, care guidelines and healing time

The flat is a cartilage piercing: healing takes months. Plan for aftercare and ways to limit pressure before getting pierced.

Ear piercing aftercare

Aftercare keeps the area clean without causing trauma. It does not sterilise the piercing channel or guarantee that an infection will not develop.

Agree an aftercare frequency with your piercer, avoiding over-cleaning:

  • Wash your hands and dry them thoroughly;
  • Use a sterile 0.9 % saline solution suitable for wounds. See the APP's recommendations.
  • Clean gently without twisting or pulling the jewellery.
  • Do not pick off crusts.
  • Dry gently with a clean gauze pad.
  • Have jewellery checked if it feels tight or uncomfortable.
  • Leave any necessary jewellery changes during healing to a professional.

Avoid sleeping on your flat piercing and check for contact with glasses, headphones, helmets or clothing. Adapt activities that might catch on it and avoid swimming or submerging it in water while it heals.

How long does a flat piercing take to heal?

Healing time varies from one person to another, and cartilage piercings often take months. For general guidance, see the APP's piercing FAQ. You may also like: flat piercing healing.

The disappearance of crusts does not prove that the piercing channel is fully healed. Visible changes alone do not provide a reliable healing timeline.

Have your piercing checked before changing jewellery for style reasons. Also ask when to return to have the post length adjusted if needed.

Healing time also depends on everyday pressures on the piercing. This TikTok specifically discusses the pressure caused by sleeping on a new piercing.

How can you recognise an infection?

Redness or a bump alone is not enough to diagnose an infection. Have any unusual changes checked.

A red, swollen or painful ear can have several causes, including irritation or infection. Appearance alone cannot determine which it is. If you notice pus, increasing pain or a fever, seek medical advice promptly: do not wait for every sign to appear.

If you suspect an infection, seek medical advice promptly.

Your piercer can also check whether the jewellery fit is adding pressure or irritation.

Materials and jewellery ideas for the flat

Choosing piercing jewellery can often feel confusing. You may be deciding between several designs, and that's normal! Our advice should help.

For initial piercing jewellery, your professional should advise what is suitable for the placement and your anatomy. See the APP's criteria for initial piercing jewellery. Solstice jewellery is intended for healed piercings.

For jewellery you plan to wear once the piercing has healed, check the material on each product page before you choose.

A stud can dress the flat with a subtle or more noticeable design. The post length, thickness and fitting must be adapted by your piercer, rather than chosen as a one-size-fits-all option.

For the design, a small sparkling stone, flower or star can work beautifully!

Wait until the piercing is fully healed before changing its style. Your piercer may adjust the post earlier if necessary, but this does not confirm that the piercing has healed.

A flat piercing can be styled with helix jewellery, a tragus stud or lobe earrings. For example, once healed, a flat stud can balance a helix hoop and small lobe earrings. A conch hoop can also change the proportions of your ear stack. Leave space between the designs and have each piece fitted to your anatomy.
