Double Tragus Piercing: Cost, Pain and Healing

By Robin Jehanno, piercing specialist at Solstice Bijoux.

You've been dreaming of a second tragus piercing for a while now.

Stylish and subtle, you love the personal touch it brings to your ear stacks. But stacking is your thing: you're dreaming of a double tragus piercing.

Unfortunately, you're worried it might not be possible
And perhaps it will hurt or be difficult to heal? đŸ€”

Don't worry! The Solstice team is here to help you make your choice and offer advice about your future piercing.

Let's find out more about the double tragus together! 🌞

Can you have your tragus pierced more than once?

Opposite the ear canal, the tragus piercing sits in a small flap of cartilage with a rounded or triangular shape. This is the piece of cartilage you can feel when you bring your finger towards the centre of your ear.

This may well be the question you keep asking yourself: can you have several tragus piercings? đŸ€”

Well
 It depends.

Depending on the size and shape of your cartilage, a double piercing, or even a triple, may be possible after assessment by a piercer. Often, the tragus simply doesn't have enough space for two piercings.

This video specifically mentions the double tragus as an alternative to discuss with your piercer, particularly if you're considering a surface tragus piercing.

To get an idea of the look, position several pieces of jewellery against your ear. This can help you visualise the arrangement, but only a piercer can assess whether your anatomy is suitable.

The anti-tragus is even more limited! This small piece of cartilage above the lobe and opposite the tragus will usually accommodate just one piece of jewellery.

What happens during a double tragus piercing?

Think a double tragus piercing might be an option for you? How exciting 😁

Does a double tragus piercing hurt?

Some people find a double tragus piercing manageable. It may feel more painful than a lobe piercing, but experiences vary. The first piercing may feel more painful than the second, though this isn't the same for everyone.

Pain is personal and hard to predict from anatomy alone.

Pain depends on 3 things:

  • The thickness of your cartilage
  • Your personal sensitivity
  • Your apprehension: do you feel confident? Stressed?

Your experience depends on several physical and psychological factors; it isn't simply 'in your head' (see the IASP's definition of pain).

And guess what? Preparing well before your piercing appointment may help you feel more at ease!

How can you prepare?

If your double tragus will be your first piercing, here's an outline of how the appointment may go.

  • You lie down (or sit down)
  • The piercer marks the positions of your 2 piercings with a pen
  • They may place a small piece of cork behind your tragus to protect your ear canal
  • They pierce your cartilage with a needle, insert the initial jewellery and secure it
  • The process is repeated for the second piercing
  • They clean the area and let you leave if everything is OK!

So, is it possible to make it hurt less? đŸ€”

Some preparation may help. We recommend:

  • Visiting a professional piercer (avoid jewellery shops for piercing!)
  • Using stress-management techniques to reduce anxiety: meditation, controlled breathing, music or bringing someone close to you
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle: hydration, nutrition and restorative sleep

  • Not taking medication specifically for the procedure unless a clinician has advised it

Preparing well can help you feel more confident about your appointment.

How much does it cost?

As an indication for a French piercing studio, a double tragus piercing often costs between 60 and 100 euros, depending on the location and the piercer's experience.

What is included varies by studio: check whether the price covers the procedure, initial jewellery and follow-up.

Aftercare and healing: our advice before changing your jewellery

Just left the piercer with a new piercing? Worried about healing problems or how long it might take?

Then you may find the following advice helpful 🙂

How long does a double tragus piercing take to heal?

Healing times vary, and cartilage piercings can take longer than expected. Ask your piercer to assess it before changing your jewellery.

Signs that healing may be progressing include:

  • Your piercing has a normal colour
  • No pus or blood is coming from it
  • You feel no pain
  • Your tragus isn't swollen

These signs alone do not confirm that the piercing has fully healed. Yes, it can take a while
But the result can be worth the wait!

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to support healing 🙂

Our aftercare advice

Is your piercing struggling to heal? Have you just left the piercer and need a quick reminder about aftercare?

Don't worry, we're here to help 🙂

Broadly speaking, here's the aftercare for your double tragus:

  • Clean the piercing every day using a compress and saline solution, following your piercer's aftercare instructions
  • Don't touch or play with your piercing outside of cleaning
  • Take care not to catch your jewellery on hair, clothing or earphones, or during sport

  • Avoid pools, lakes, rivers and similar wet environments, and dry your ears thoroughly after showering
  • Do not use chemical products on your piercing, such as make-up, soap or creams

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, hydration and sleep

These steps can support healing, but your piercing still needs time.

What jewellery should you wear?

Not sure which jewellery to choose for your healed double tragus piercing? There are plenty of options!

For example, two hoops will add more volume to your ear. If you prefer a subtler look, two small studs are a lovely alternative 😉

Important: only change your jewellery once your piercing has healed. Solstice catalogue jewellery is intended for healed piercings, not initial piercing or healing.

This demonstration shows a single tragus piercing, but helps you visualise hoop and stud styles. For two piercings, their combined fit needs to be assessed with your piercer.

What about a triple tragus piercing?

Although extremely rare, some people choose to have 3 piercings in their tragus.

A triple tragus piercing is sometimes confused with a surface tragus piercing, which sits on the surface rather than through the tragus cartilage.

If your tragus is thick enough and you love stacking, discuss the possibility with your piercer!
