Everything You Need to Know About Daith Piercing Pain

By Robin Jehanno, piercing specialist at Solstice Bijoux.

A daith piercing can hurt during the procedure and remain tender afterwards. There is no single duration or pain score that applies to everyone. Worsening pain should be assessed, even if the piercing is recent.

Does a daith piercing hurt?

A daith piercing goes through a fold of cartilage in the middle of the ear, near the ear canal. This placement is often styled with a hoop or horseshoe barbell. It sits below the rook and helix, beside the tragus.

The sensation varies from person to person. Your worries, previous experiences and the circumstances of the appointment can influence how you approach it. Someone else's account, whether very painful or very reassuring, cannot predict your own experience. Talk to your piercer if this concern is holding you back.

What happens during a piercing appointment?

Before any piercing, you need to see a piercer to check whether your ear anatomy is suitable. This is particularly important for a daith piercing, as not every ear has the right anatomy for this placement.

The piercer checks the placement, prepares the area and equipment, then performs the piercing and fits suitable jewellery. Allow time for aftercare instructions and an explanation of follow-up care too.

The needle passing through may feel like a pinch or a brief, sharp pain. This is different from tenderness afterwards: your ear may remain tender in the following days. There is no timeline that applies to everyone. Worsening symptoms should not automatically be put down to healing.

A daith piercing passes through a fold of cartilage and can be painful. Pain is personal: a universal score out of 10 cannot predict your experience (see the IASP definition of pain).

You do not need to have a helix piercing before considering a daith. Your choice depends on your anatomy, expectations and ability to follow the aftercare instructions.

How long does tenderness last after a daith piercing?

Tenderness after the procedure and complete healing are not the same thing. Cartilage healing can take time, according to the APP. Significant or worsening pain should be assessed rather than judged by a fixed timeline.

If the pain gets worse, pus appears or you have a fever, seek medical advice promptly. If the jewellery is causing discomfort, also have your piercer check its fit.

Check whether your earphones press against the jewellery too. Avoid this pressure during healing and have persistent discomfort assessed.

Personal experiences of daith piercing

These accounts describe individual experiences and include their original sources. They illustrate different sensations without establishing an average:

“ The procedure went well, apart from the pain (although I have a high pain tolerance for this sort of thing). But healing wasn't quick at all “, Victoria (Canada) on this website

“ If my daith hurt a lot, my conch hurt even more. And for the first time, a piercing hurt for up to 2h afterwards, even without touching it. It throbbed the whole time. That said, I think it's one of the places where the cartilage is thickest ” on this website

To complement these accounts, here is a personal experience of daith piercing pain and healing. The sensations described are specific to her experience.

Find jewellery that works together

If you like the look of a daith piercing, try pairing it with your lobe or helix jewellery in the Solstice Ear Stack Builder. Compare shapes and colours to build an ear stack, a combination of jewellery that feels like you.

A daith piercing passes through a fold of cartilage near the ear canal. Before deciding, have your anatomy checked and think about whether your earphones are likely to press on the area. It should not be chosen as a treatment for migraines. Also explore: daith jewellery.

Here is what to keep in mind.

How can you prepare for the appointment and the days afterwards?

Preparing for the appointment and limiting pressure afterwards may help make the experience more comfortable. This does not guarantee a low level of pain.

Our tips to help you prepare and stay comfortable

Follow the studio's instructions: eat normally, stay hydrated and arrive well rested. Tie back long hair to keep your ear clear.

If you feel stressed, ask your piercer to explain the steps and give you time to ask questions. Bringing someone with you, if the studio allows it, or breathing calmly may help you feel at ease. These relaxation techniques do not guarantee a pain-free experience.

Do not use numbing cream or take medication for the piercing without appropriate advice from a healthcare professional. Tell them about any medication you take and do not stop taking it yourself.

Choose a piercer who checks your daith anatomy, explains the sterile equipment they use and offers follow-up care. Professionalism does not guarantee a painless procedure.

After the appointment, monitor how your symptoms change and watch for pressure points. If you need pain relief, seek appropriate advice; do not mask worsening symptoms with products applied to the wound.

To support healing:

  • Follow a gentle routine using sterile saline solution suitable for wounds, without over-cleaning.
  • Watch out for snagging on clothing, earphones and hair
  • Adapt activities that could knock or snag the jewellery.
  • Avoid swimming
  • Do not touch the wound
  • Leave any necessary jewellery changes during healing to your piercer.

Aftercare keeps the area clean but cannot treat an infection on its own.

Can a daith piercing relieve pain and migraines?

A daith piercing is not a recommended treatment for migraine. Personal accounts of relief do not show that the piercing treats migraine.

Acupuncture and piercing: two different practices

Acupuncture and daith piercing are two different practices. A daith piercing creates a channel for wearing jewellery: its placement alone does not make it a treatment.

Acupuncture and piercing are not equivalent procedures; results from one cannot be applied to the other.

The hypothesis that jewellery affects an acupuncture point is not evidence that it is effective against migraines.

Accounts linking this piercing to the solar plexus, stress or anxiety do not justify promises of relief. A symbolic interpretation is not medical evidence.

Is a daith piercing really effective against migraines?

If you experience migraines, work with a healthcare professional to find appropriate care. Choosing jewellery does not replace that care.

An account of relief after a daith piercing cannot, on its own, establish that the piercing caused it or predict the same result for someone else.

Migraine requires appropriate care with a healthcare professional. Getting a piercing should not lead you to stop your treatment.

The scientific review published in Headache in 2024 concludes that the available evidence does not support recommending daith piercing for migraine.

Percentages drawn from surveys or personal accounts are not clinical evidence; see the American Migraine Foundation's guidance.

Someone reporting an improvement in their wellbeing does not demonstrate that the jewellery caused it.

This TikTok specifically addresses migraines. It shares questions and a personal experience without demonstrating any therapeutic effect of the piercing.
