Snug piercing: the ultimate guide

By Robin Jehanno, piercing specialist at Solstice Bijoux.

Have you decided to get a snug piercing? Looking for information about cost, healing and pain before visiting a piercer?

At Solstice, we're passionate about ear piercings. And we're here to answer your questions.

A snug piercing sits in the outer cartilage, midway up the ear and opposite the ear canal. Jewellery options depend on your anatomy and how the piercing has healed, and once healed it can suit a balanced double-stud look. Relatively uncommon, it can be quite painful because of the thickness of the cartilage. In French studios, the procedure is often priced around 40 to 60 euros.

You'll discover:

  • Everything you need to know about this piercing: pain, cost, healing and more
  • Tips to support healing
  • Which jewellery to wear in a healed snug piercing
  • How to prepare before having your cartilage pierced

Get to know the snug piercing inside out.

Let's get started!

Where is the snug?

The snug is the fold of cartilage opposite the external ear canal. This horizontal piercing sits midway up the ear, in the same cartilage ridge as the rook. It lies below the helix.

This piercing in the middle of the ear is often confused with the conch because their locations are close together.

A snug piercing can accommodate different jewellery styles, depending on your anatomy and how it has healed. However, it remains relatively uncommon because it requires an experienced piercer and can be quite painful.

Snug location

Both triple and double snug piercings are even rarer, but may be possible for some people, depending on their ear anatomy and the shape of their cartilage.

The difference in placement becomes clearer on an ear: this demonstration locates the snug and anti-tragus using imitation jewellery, without performing a piercing.

Snug piercing pain

Many people worry about having their ears pierced because of the pain. However, the experience varies from person to person and depends on the area being pierced. So, does a snug ear piercing hurt?

Is a snug piercing painful?

A snug piercing passes through a fold of cartilage and can be painful. The intensity varies from person to person; no numerical ranking presented here can predict how it will feel for you (see the IASP definition of pain).

The initial sensation can be a brief, sharp, throbbing pain, similar to a pinch. This acute pain may ease quickly, within a few minutes, although experiences vary. The area may stay red, swollen and tender for a while afterwards.

Because a snug piercing can be painful, we don't recommend it as your first cartilage piercing. You could discuss a helix or tragus piercing with your piercer instead: these areas may be thinner, although anatomy and sensitivity vary.

How can you ease the pain of an ear piercing?

Pain is a personal experience. Preparing and reducing stress may help you feel more comfortable during the appointment, without guaranteeing a pain-free experience.

The first essential piece of advice is to visit a professional piercer for your snug piercing. For cartilage, a professional piercer will use appropriate sterile equipment rather than a piercing gun.

Before visiting your piercer, make sure you've eaten enough, slept well and drunk plenty of water. These steps can help support your body as it heals.

Finally, prepare yourself mentally and emotionally. Focus on feeling ready for the appointment. Breathe into your belly, listen to your favourite song, chat with your piercer or meditate
 Try to approach it calmly.

How long does healing take?

The healing process for a snug piercing can be lengthy and varies from person to person. The ear's shape in this area is distinctive: the cartilage is curved, thick and prone to snagging.

During healing, the area may look irritated at times and can produce some dried discharge.

If you're unsure whether what you're seeing is part of healing or a sign of a problem, seek advice promptly.

Do not change your jewellery yourself unless a qualified piercer has confirmed that your snug piercing is healed. They can also fit another piece of jewellery for you.

This personal ranking discusses the snug in particular: its appearance, the anatomy it requires and possible healing difficulties. It complements the precautions in this section.

Aftercare advice for a new piercing

When you have an ear piercing, your body responds by healing the wound. It defends itself and reacts to external factors, such as germs and the piercer's needle. But how does a snug piercing heal? How can you recognise and avoid infections?

How do you care for a new snug piercing?

Because a snug piercing sits in an outer section of cartilage, take care to avoid snagging it on clothing, your phone or your hair. Try to avoid knocks, pressure and anything that may irritate the area while it heals.

Also make sure you follow a consistent aftercare routine. Aftercare supports healing before you can change your jewellery and may help reduce some complications, although it cannot guarantee prevention of keloids or infections. Keeping the wound clean supports your body's healing process.

Here is a simple routine for your snug:

  • Wash your hands and dry them thoroughly;
  • Put a little saline solution on a compress;
  • Gently dab the area around your piercing;
  • Clean away visible residue without forcing anything;
  • Rinse your ear with lukewarm water;
  • Leave the jewellery undisturbed;
  • Never remove your piercing jewellery yourself during healing.

How do you recognise a possible infection?

Cartilage can become red, swollen and painful without necessarily being infected. If you've exercised or snagged your ear, it may simply be irritation.

Pus, increasing pain, spreading redness or a fever warrant prompt medical advice. Cleaning alone does not treat an infection: see the signs of infection described by the NHS.

Do not assume a cartilage infection will clear up on its own.

Snug ear piercing costs and prices

Love the look of this piercing and wondering how much it costs?

As an indication, a snug piercing in a French studio is often priced around 40 to 60 euros. The service price may include the piercing procedure, the jewellery, aftercare advice and follow-up with the piercer.

We recommend avoiding jewellery shops offering tourist-trap prices. Retail staff may not be professional piercers, and the quality of their equipment can vary. Choose a professional piercer with the expertise to care for your ear. Expect prices to vary according to their location and experience.

Materials, jewellery and ear stack ideas

With its distinctive placement and shape, a snug piercing can suit a bold, creative style. But which jewellery can you wear in a healed snug piercing? The catalogue jewellery shown here is for healed piercings.

A healed snug piercing may accommodate several jewellery styles, depending on your anatomy: a traditional stud with a small ball or crystal, a curved barbell, a horseshoe barbell or a hoop. Curved barbells with a small ball or crystal at each end are generally preferred.

For the initial procedure, the jewellery chosen by the piercer should be appropriate for a new piercing. The catalogue jewellery shown here is for healed piercings, not for initial piercing.

If you want to change the jewellery in a snug piercing, wait until a qualified piercer has assessed it and confirmed that it is ready. We advise against changing it yourself before then.

A snug piercing pairs beautifully with helix and rook jewellery and classic lobe earrings. Once healed, you could wear a curved barbell in your snug, a hoop in your helix and earrings in your lobes to build an ear stack by combining several pieces.

Snug and tragus piercings also work well together! Let your creativity guide you and experiment with layering hoops while keeping the look balanced.
