    Your tragus questions

What size should I choose for my tragus jewellery?

Here are some guidelines for choosing jewellery for a healed piercing, adapted to your ear. Your piercer determines the dimensions for initial piercing jewellery.

    Size guide - tragus
Jewellery / measurementGuideChoosing the right fit
Hoop 6 to 8 mm inner diameterIt should sit around the tragus without pinching it.
Stud / labret Often 6 to 8 mm wearable lengthA well-fitted flat back avoids excess post length behind the ear.
Post thickness Often 1.2 mmCheck that it matches the thickness of your piercing.

A hoop's diameter is measured on the inside; a post's wearable length is measured between its functional ends, excluding the decorative detail. Compare it with jewellery that already fits you and have the measurement confirmed if you are unsure.

For more information, read our tragus guide.

Measure across the centre of the circle, between the inner edges. The outer diameter includes the metal and is not the listed size.

Measure a labret between its back and its decorative front. At the tragus, also leave space near the ear opening and check how it sits with your earphones.

Download the hoop sizing template (A4 PDF)
Print at 100%. Check the 50 mm line, then compare with a hoop that already fits you.

What type of jewellery suits a tragus piercing?

A flat-back labret stud is an understated choice: a small design is enough to brighten your tragus. A tragus hoop adds a lovely rounded line. Check the space available for the decorative end and the post length: jewellery that is too bulky can quickly become uncomfortable here.

How long does a tragus piercing take to heal?

Allow 6 to 9 months, sometimes longer, for this cartilage piercing to heal. The time depends on your ear and everyday snagging and pressure. An absence of pain is not enough to confirm healing: your piercer can check its progress before a jewellery change.

How painful is a tragus piercing?

A tragus piercing passes through cartilage: you may feel a brief, sometimes sharp sting, followed by pressure as the jewellery is inserted. The sensation varies greatly from person to person.

Being close to the ear canal can make the sounds of the procedure more noticeable; a sound alone does not mean that the cartilage is cracking. Arriving relaxed and choosing a piercer who explains each step can help you feel more comfortable with the experience.

When can I change the initial jewellery in my tragus piercing?

Wait until your piercing has fully healed and have your piercer confirm this before changing jewellery for aesthetic reasons. An ear that looks settled on the surface may still be delicate inside. Shortening the post during healing is an adjustment carried out by your piercer, which is different from changing to decorative jewellery.

When can I sleep on my tragus piercing?

Avoid sleeping directly on this piercing while it heals. A pillow with a hole, with your ear resting in the opening, may reduce pressure. Afterwards, only resume if the contact feels comfortable: even with a healed piercing, jewellery must not press into your ear during the night.

I've just had my tragus pierced: how can I support healing and avoid complications?

Wash your hands before aftercare. Clean with a sterile wound-care saline solution containing 0.9 % sodium chloride, then dry gently with a clean disposable gauze pad, preferably non-woven. Choose this rather than cotton wool or cotton buds to reduce fibres that can catch on the jewellery.

Do not rotate the jewellery, and minimise handling, pressure and snagging. Avoid sleeping on the piercing while it heals, as well as alcohol and irritating products. Gentle aftercare supports healing; doing it more often does not speed up the process.

If pain increases, redness spreads or you develop a fever, seek medical advice promptly.

Can I wear earbuds with a tragus piercing?

During healing, avoid wearing an earbud on the pierced side: it can press on the jewellery. Once the piercing has healed, try gently with a well-fitted labret stud and a clean earbud. If you feel pressure or discomfort, do not force it; the shape of both the jewellery and the earbud matters.

What material do you use? Is your piercing jewellery hypoallergenic?

Our piercing jewellery is made from hypoallergenic titanium. Our jewellery has undergone laboratory testing. You'll find the material, finish and dimensions on each product page to help you choose your piece with confidence.

Should I choose the gold-tone or silver-tone finish?

Gold-tone brings warmth to your ear stack; the white-gold-coloured finish gives it bright, light reflections with a chrome-like appearance. This describes the colour: the base material is still titanium. A styling tip: bluish or purplish veins may point towards cool tones, while greenish veins may point towards gold-tone. It's a styling guide, not a rule: try both near your face in natural light.

Why is titanium a better choice for sensitive ears?

Our titanium is hypoallergenic and contains no nickel, making it a suitable choice for sensitive ears.

Can I shower or exercise wearing your jewellery?

Yes, for healed piercings. Our titanium jewellery is resistant to rust and highly resistant to tarnishing. Its EverGold coating is designed to help preserve its shine and colour over time with everyday wear.

After showering or exercising, rinse your jewellery if necessary and dry it thoroughly. For activities where jewellery could snag or be pulled, choose a suitable jewellery arrangement.

Can I return jewellery if I don't like how it looks on me?

You have 30 days after receipt to request a return.

How should I care for my piercing jewellery?

After removing your jewellery, clean it with lukewarm water and a little mild soap, rinse, then dry with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive products and cosmetics.

How do you build an ear stack with a tragus piercing?

Looking for understated tragus jewellery that still makes an impression? A sparkling stud draws the eye close to your face without overpowering the other pieces. It pairs beautifully with a hoop in your helix: the point of light in the centre echoes the curve above.

For a softer look, choose a fine hoop for your tragus and rounded designs for your lobe. If you like contrast, pair a small geometric design with a more prominent conch piece instead. A similar sparkle or shared finish naturally connects the pieces.

Some designs in our selection of piercing jewellery with chains list the tragus among their suitable placements. Check their attachments, length and the space available before putting your look together.

The tragus has limited space: leave room around it. A chain on a neighbouring piece can add movement to the whole look without crowding this area. Try different combinations and keep the ones that make you want to put your hair up.

Visualise your combinations in the Solstice Ear Stack Builder and explore our ear stacks to find your starting point. You can try different looks, move pieces and refine the proportions before choosing your jewellery.

Studs and short posts for the tragus

A stud adds an elegant, delicate touch. It consists of a straight post and a decorative end; a labret has a flat back. The fastening varies by design. Check the product page rather than choosing solely by the shape of the decorative end.

A small flower, a fine motif or a sparkle of crystals decorates this cartilage without hiding it. Choose proportions that leave your ear some space: post length and decorative size are two different measurements.

The tragus hoop, a softly curved line

A hoop curves around the small raised area and adds volume to your ear stack. A smooth hoop pairs easily with more detailed jewellery; with crystals, it becomes a sparkling accent. Tragus hoops let you vary the look, provided you choose a suitable diameter.

A correctly sized hoop leaves a little room without unnecessary snagging. Plan the change from a stud to a hoop with your piercer: the guide and the question about changing jewellery provide useful pointers.

    Where is a tragus piercing?

The tragus is the small raised area of cartilage in front of the entrance to the ear canal. Its size varies from one ear to another: a piercer checks that there is enough tissue to accommodate the jewellery. A surface piercing near the tragus is a different piercing that requires its own assessment and specific jewellery; a curved barbell from this selection is not a substitute.
