    Your helix questions

What size should I choose for my helix piercing?

Here are some guidelines for choosing jewellery for a healed piercing, adapted to your ear. Your piercer determines the dimensions for initial piercing jewellery.

    Size guide - helix
Jewellery / measurementGuideChoosing the right fit
Hoop 8 to 10 mm inner diameter6 mm may suit a piercing very close to the edge, once the fit has been checked.
Stud / labret 6 to 8 mm wearable lengthThe post must not fit too tightly or protrude excessively.
Post thickness Often 1.2 mmKeep to your piercing's existing thickness.

A hoop's diameter is measured on the inside; a post's wearable length is measured between its functional ends, excluding the decorative detail. Compare it with jewellery that already fits you and have the measurement confirmed if you're unsure.

For more information, see our helix guide.

Avril in the helix · 8 mm and 10 mm

Gold-tone Avril in the helix, inner diameter 8 mm
    Avril · 8 mm

Gold-tone Avril in the helix, inner diameter 10 mm
    Avril · 10 mm

Design shown in a gold-tone finish.

We like Avril for its line of crystals: the 8 mm size sits closer to the edge, while the 10 mm size leaves more room. The result depends on your ear; either way, the hoop should feel comfortable without pinching.

Measure across the centre of the circle, between the inner edges. The outer diameter includes the metal and is not the listed size.

Print at 100%. Check the 50 mm line, then compare with a hoop that already fits you.

What type of jewellery suits a helix piercing?

For a minimalist touch, we love fine, subtle studs. Some elongated decorative details follow the curve of the helix beautifully for a balanced look.

If you want more volume, choose a helix hoop, with or without a chain. Bright and more eye-catching, these pieces can become the focal point of your ear stack.

How long does a helix piercing take to heal?

Allow 6 to 9 months, sometimes longer, for this cartilage piercing to heal. The time depends on your ear and everyday snagging and pressure. An absence of pain is not enough to confirm healing: your piercer can check its progress before a jewellery change.

Does getting a helix piercing hurt?

The helix is a common piercing. You may feel a brief, sharp sting during the procedure; the sensation varies from person to person. Arriving relaxed and choosing a piercer who explains the procedure can help make the experience more manageable.

The rim of your ear remains exposed to hair, clothing and pressure afterwards. Snagging can prolong tenderness while the piercing heals. Tie your hair back with a scrunchie or clip; if you use a headband, keep it clean and ensure it neither touches nor puts pressure on the piercing.

When can I change my initial helix jewellery?

Wait until the piercing is fully healed and have this confirmed by your piercer before changing jewellery for appearance. The absence of redness, pain, discharge or crusting is reassuring, but is not enough on its own: an ear that looks settled on the surface may still be fragile inside. Avoid handling the jewellery to test whether it has healed.

Shortening the post during healing is an adjustment carried out by your piercer, separate from switching to decorative jewellery.

When can I sleep on my helix piercing?

Avoid sleeping directly on this piercing while it heals. The initial post is often longer to allow room for swelling; your piercer chooses its length to suit your ear.

If this post has not been shortened when needed, pressure during sleep can tilt the jewellery, irritate the piercing and contribute to an irritation bump. Have this adjustment carried out by your piercer.

A pillow with a hole, with your ear resting in the opening, can help limit pressure. After healing, only resume sleeping on it if contact feels comfortable: the jewellery must not compress your ear during the night.

I've just had my helix pierced: how can I support healing and avoid complications?

Wash your hands before aftercare. Clean with a sterile saline wound solution containing 0.9 % sodium chloride, then gently dry with a clean disposable gauze pad, preferably non-woven. Choose this rather than cotton wool or cotton buds to limit fibres that can catch on the jewellery.

Do not twist the jewellery. Avoid handling it, snagging, pressure during sleep, alcohol and essential oils. Gentle, regular aftercare supports healing; cleaning more often does not speed it up.

If pain increases, redness spreads or you develop a fever, seek medical advice promptly.

Is a helix a good choice for a first piercing?

A helix is a common choice after the lobe, but it isn't necessarily the first placement we'd recommend. On the rim of the ear, it can snag on hair and be exposed to pressure that complicates healing.

At Solstice, we also like to suggest the conch, which sits further inside the ear, as an alternative to consider. This does not guarantee easier healing: the choice depends on your anatomy and habits, which you should discuss with your piercer.

What material do you use? Is your piercing jewellery hypoallergenic?

Our piercing jewellery is made from hypoallergenic titanium. Our jewellery has undergone laboratory testing. You'll find the material, finish and dimensions on each product page to help you choose your piece with confidence.

Should I choose the gold-tone or silver-tone finish?

Gold-tone brings warmth to your ear stack; the white-gold-coloured finish gives it bright, light reflections with a chrome-like appearance. This describes the colour: the base material is still titanium. A styling tip: bluish or purplish veins may point towards cool tones, while greenish veins may point towards gold-tone. It's a styling guide, not a rule: try both near your face in natural light.

Why choose titanium rather than 925 silver or stainless steel?

Hypoallergenic and nickel-free, our titanium is laboratory-tested. It resists oxidation and the dark tarnishing associated with silver, helping it retain its shine over time, including when worn in the shower, during exercise or at the beach.

How should I care for my piercing jewellery?

Remove your jewellery and clean it with lukewarm water and a little mild soap, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive products and cosmetics.

Can I wear your jewellery to sleep?

Yes, in a healed piercing and with well-fitting jewellery. Flat-back studs can be particularly comfortable; a hoop can also be suitable if it causes no pressure or discomfort. While the piercing is healing, avoid sleeping directly on it.

Can I shower or exercise wearing your jewellery?

Yes, for healed piercings. Our titanium jewellery is resistant to rust and highly resistant to tarnishing. Its EverGold coating is designed to help preserve its shine and colour over time with everyday wear.

After showering or exercising, rinse your jewellery if necessary and dry it thoroughly. For activities where jewellery could snag or be pulled, choose a suitable jewellery arrangement.

Can I return jewellery if I don't like how it looks on me?

You have 30 days after receipt to request a return.

How do I build an ear stack with a helix piercing?

On the upper rim of the ear, a helix adds a touch of light to the top of your ear stack. For a stud, we love elongated shapes that follow its curve. If you want more volume or a statement piece, our hoops and jewellery with chains give this placement more presence.

A helix pairs beautifully with a conch or tragus. More delicate jewellery at the lobe can complete the look and give your favourite piece room to stand out.

To see how your new jewellery works with the rest of your ear, try your combinations in the Solstice Ear Stack Builder. Our ear stacks can also give you ideas.

    Helix hoops, a rounded touch

A hoop is a favourite for highlighting the rim of the ear. A delicate design pairs easily with lobe jewellery; a piece adorned with crystals becomes the detail that catches the eye. If you have several piercings, layering can create a very delicate look: balance comes from the proportions and the space between the pieces.

The look also depends on the diameter. A hoop close to the cartilage traces its curve, while a looser design allows more movement. The smallest isn't always the most flattering when worn: well-fitting jewellery follows the ear without compressing it. Find sizing guidelines in the FAQ.

    Stud earrings

A stud combines a straight post with a decorative end. A labret has a flat back; other designs fasten with a ball. The exact system is listed on the product page. A small star, flower or light-catching motif can be enough to change the look of an ear stack.

For a soft effect, group rounded shapes together. For a more graphic look, pair a fine line with a more defined motif. The idea is to find pieces you'll enjoy wearing together, rather than simply adding more jewellery.

    What is a helix piercing?

The helix follows the outer rim of the cartilage in the upper or middle part of the ear. You can have one piercing or several, depending on the available space. The anti-helix, also called the forward helix, sits on the opposite rim, near the face: discover jewellery for the anti-helix.
