Tragus piercing pain: intensity, duration and advice

By Robin Jehanno, piercing specialist at Solstice Bijoux.

Love the look of a tragus piercing but worried it might hurt?

That’s understandable! We’ve had those worries too.

Worrying about pain puts many people off getting a piercing
Still, some people find the experience manageable, and we’ll explore what to expect.

Close to the ear canal, a tragus piercing is both discreet and stylish. Jewellery in this placement is a lovely way to give your ear stacks a personal touch! 🌞

Let’s explore the pain involved in a tragus piercing !

We’ll also share a few tips to help you prepare for your piercing 🙂

Does a tragus piercing hurt?

As a reminder, the tragus is a piece of cartilage just in front of the ear canal. It’s the small rounded or triangular flap you can feel with your finger.

A distinctive piercing that can bring character and a bold touch to your ear stacks!

Are we picturing the same placement now? 😉

Getting your tragus pierced can cause a brief pinching sensation, followed by tenderness around the piercing. There is no measure here that can guarantee mild pain or the same experience for everyone.

Pain varies from person to person, so no single detail can predict exactly how a tragus piercing will feel 💡

Of course, the intensity of the pain may depend on the thickness of your cartilage, as well as your personal sensitivity and how apprehensive you feel. What are you expecting from the experience? Do you feel confident? Anxious?

Stress can affect how pain feels, but pain is more than a mental experience: see the IASP definition of pain.

So, what happens when you get a tragus piercing? đŸ€”

The process is fairly straightforward:

  • You sit or lie down
  • The piercer disinfects your tragus and marks the piercing placement
  • They pierce your ear with a needle, insert the jewellery and secure the initial piece
  • For a tragus piercing, a small piece of cork is often held behind the cartilage to protect the ear canal
  • The piercer cleans your new piercing and lets you leave if everything has gone well

Please note: not every tragus is suitable for this piercing. A professional piercer can assess your anatomy 😉

After the piercing, your ear may be red, swollen and sore. Some initial redness, swelling and soreness can be expected, but symptoms that worsen should not be dismissed.

The anti-tragus sits opposite the tragus, close to the lobe. It may feel different to have this area pierced, but there is no fixed score that can compare your pain between these two placements.

Feeling a little more reassured? 🙂

How long does the pain last?

After a tragus piercing, tenderness can continue for a while and then ease gradually.

That’s only a broad guide. In practice, discomfort can change over time.

As the piercer’s needle passes through your tragus, the pain may feel sharp, like a pinch. This part is usually brief.

The pain may gradually become duller over the next few minutes.

It may then settle into general tenderness for a while. The intensity and duration can vary from person to person.

Pain can flare up again later, for example if you accidentally snag or irritate the piercing. We’ll discuss that in the next section 🙂

We know, that sounds like quite a lot to take in

Fortunately, there are steps that may help ease tragus piercing pain before and after the procedure.

That’s a more encouraging thought! 🌞

This account discusses tragus tenderness and the practical restrictions during healing, particularly when using earphones. Everyone’s experience is different.

How can you ease tragus piercing pain?

The big day is here! You’ve booked an appointment with a piercer for your new tragus piercing.

If you’ve decided to go ahead, congratulations. If you’re still considering it, take the time you need to decide 😉

Before heading to your piercer, here are a few tips to help you prepare for the procedure.

How can you prepare to help reduce pain?

  • Try meditation or visualising the appointment going well
  • Listen to your favourite music just before your appointment
  • Bring someone close to you who can help you feel reassured

The aim? To help you relax! Stress can make pain feel more intense. Feeling tense may make the appointment harder to manage.

Take a breath and give yourself a moment to settle.

We also suggest staying hydrated, getting enough sleep and eating a proper meal a few hours before your piercing. These steps can help you feel better prepared, although they cannot guarantee less pain 😉

Above all, do not take painkillers before the procedure without checking with a healthcare professional, and have your piercing done at a professional piercing studio. Do not stop prescribed medication without medical advice.

Finally, avoid jewellery shops that use piercing guns. These devices may cause more tissue trauma than a professional piercer’s needle, and can pose hygiene risks 😰

To help you prepare, this video discusses how much time to allow, choosing a professional and taking your anatomy into account.

Aftercare to help ease piercing pain

After getting your piercing, you’ll need to take particular care of your tragus. These aftercare tips are intended to support that care:

  • Clean your piercing daily with a saline solution
  • Avoid activities that could knock or put pressure on the area
  • Avoid swimming
  • Be mindful of your sleeping position and avoid pressure on the piercing
  • Avoid knocks and snagging from hair, clothing or earphones
  • Do not touch or play with your piercing

A tragus piercing can develop an infection and become painful again, so careful aftercare matters.

In particular, do not use earphones with your tragus piercing while it is healing, as they may snag the piercing and make the pain worse

Healing times vary from person to person, so avoid relying on a fixed timeline alone.

Yes, it takes patience
But you may feel the result is worth it 😉

If you think your piercing may be infected, seek medical advice promptly (see the NHS guidance on infected piercings). Your piercer can also check the jewellery.
