Your questions, our advice

Which stud size should I choose for my piercing placement?

Two measurements matter: post thickness and post length. A thickness of 1.2 mm is common for cartilage piercings. For lobes, 1.2 mm suits many piercings, but some need a thinner post, such as 1 mm: stick to the thickness that fits your piercing.

The length depends on your anatomy. At Solstice, we offer an intermediate size of 7 mm. The measurements below are a guide and may vary from one ear to another.

Post thickness and length: a guide by placement
Jewellery / measurementGuideChoosing the right fit
Helix, anti-helix and flatThickness: 1.2 mmSuggested length: 6 to 7 mm
Tragus and conchThickness: 1.2 mmSuggested length: 7 to 8 mm
LobeThickness: 1 or 1.2 mm, depending on the piercingSuggested length: 6 to 8 mm

Need a shorter, longer or thinner post than the one supplied? Contact Robin with the model and the dimensions you would like instead of the 7 mm post. If the jewellery does not fit when it arrives, you can also ask us for another suitable post.

Our threadless replacement post comes in several sizes, which you can select on the product page. It fits compatible threadless ends; for a threaded stud, contact Robin to choose the right post.

Why choose a flat-back stud rather than a ball back or butterfly fastening?

The flat back is a small disc that sits against the back of your ear. It protrudes less than a ball back or butterfly fastening and spreads pressure more evenly, often making it more comfortable when you lie on your side.

For jewellery you like to wear every day, it is a discreet, practical option. Its smooth surface is also easier to clean. Comfort depends on the post length too: the disc should sit against your ear without pressing into it.

Are your studs internally threaded or threadless (screw-in or push-fit)?

None of our studs are externally threaded: there is no screw thread on the part of the post that passes through your piercing. This section stays smooth to avoid a thread rubbing against the skin when you insert or remove the jewellery.

We offer two systems: internally threaded, where the decorative end screws into the post, and threadless, also known as push-fit, where the end is held in place by a push-fit connection.

We often favour threadless fittings for larger decorative ends, partly because they are easy to use. A push-fit end may come loose if pulled firmly; this does not, however, guarantee protection if it catches on something. A screw-in end stays attached as long as it is properly tightened. The choice depends on your preferences and the model.

Which piercing placements are your studs suitable for?

Our studs can be worn in healed lobe, helix, tragus, conch, flat and anti-helix piercings, depending on the jewellery’s dimensions and your anatomy. Rook and daith piercings generally need a curved shape or a suitable hoop.

At Solstice, we particularly love a stud in the third lobe piercing, tragus or flat: a delicate touch of light that rounds off an ear stack beautifully. Choose the placement you like.

Is the titanium in your studs hypoallergenic?

Our titanium piercing jewellery is hypoallergenic, and our jewellery is checked by a laboratory. The material and finish are two separate details: you can find both in the specifications for your chosen model.

Why choose titanium rather than 925 silver or stainless steel?

Hypoallergenic and nickel-free, our titanium is laboratory-tested. It resists oxidation and the dark tarnishing associated with silver, helping it retain its shine over time, including when worn in the shower, during exercise or at the beach.

How should I care for my piercing jewellery?

Remove your jewellery and clean it with lukewarm water and a little mild soap, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive products and cosmetics.

Can I sleep in your studs?

Yes, in healed piercings. Flat-back studs can be comfortable to sleep in thanks to the small disc that sits against your ear. A post suited to your anatomy can help reduce pressure on the skin.

Can I shower or exercise in your titanium studs?

Yes, in healed piercings. The titanium used in our studs does not rust and is highly resistant to tarnishing.

Our gold-tone models also have our EverGold coating, designed to help preserve their shine and colour over time, including with everyday wear.

How can I build my own ear stack?

At Solstice, we created the Solstice Ear Stack Builder to help you explore combinations before choosing your jewellery. Try your studs alongside the other pieces in your selection and see them together on an ear: you can explore how the shapes, proportions and finishes work together.

A personalised ear-stacking experience created by Solstice, available directly on our website.

The stud, a favourite for everyday wear

Delicate, minimalist and comfortable, a stud is one of those pieces we love to wear wherever the day takes us, during exercise, at the beach or even while sleeping, provided the model and fit are suitable.

At Solstice, our titanium models are lightweight, hypoallergenic and comfortable for everyday wear in healed piercings. The quality of our titanium is also checked in a laboratory.

Some of our studs are threadless too, making everyday use simpler and more comfortable.

Which placements show off a stud best?

In the tragus, a small stud gently highlights this delicate area. In the helix, we love pairing it with a small chain to add movement to an ear stack.

The flat gives a stud’s decorative detail room to shine. In the anti-helix or the third lobe piercing, a small piece adds a final delicate touch of light. The best look is the one you like, with enough space around each piece.
