    Your ear piercing jewellery questions

What size should I choose for each placement?

For a hoop, compare the inner diameter. For a stud, check the wearable post length. These guidelines are for a healed piercing: your anatomy and placement remain the deciding factors. Your piercer chooses the dimensions for initial piercing jewellery.

    Sizes by placement
Placement Hoop Stud / labret Choosing your size
Helix 8 to 10 mm6 to 8 mm6 mm may suit some piercings close to the edge.
Conch Often 10 to 12 mm6 to 8 mmSometimes larger, depending on the depth of the piercing.
Tragus Often 6 to 8 mmOften 6 to 8 mmWithout compressing the small cartilage prominence.
Rook Often 6 to 8 mmNot applicableHave the fit checked against your cartilage fold.
Daith Often 8 to 10 mmNot applicableCheck that there is enough space for the complete design.
Lobe 6 to 8 mm for a close fit; 8 to 12 mm for a looser fitOften 6 to 8 mmDepending on the piercing and the look you want.
Flat No standard sizeOften 6 to 8 mmPost length, not hoop diameter.
Anti-helix 6 mmMeasure the required lengthHave your piercer confirm the length; no single guideline suits every ear.
Snug Check with your piercerNot applicableCurved barbell fitted to the fold.

We like a slightly larger hoop in the first lobe piercing to create a beautiful foundation for an ear stack. This is a styling idea: the distance from the piercing to the edge guides the size. Explore our ear piercing guide too.

Measure across the centre of the circle, between the inner edges. The outer diameter includes the metal and is not the listed size.

Print at 100%. Check the 50 mm line, then compare with a hoop that already fits you.

    Is Solstice piercing jewellery hypoallergenic?

Yes, our titanium piercing jewellery is hypoallergenic. Our jewellery is tested by a laboratory.

    Should I choose a gold-tone or silver-tone finish?

Gold-tone brings warm reflections. Our silver-tone finish is a white-gold-coloured finish, bright and light with a chrome-like appearance, rather than the darker grey of uncoated titanium. The base material remains titanium.

A styling tip: bluish or purplish veins can be a cue to try white-gold-coloured jewellery; greenish veins, gold-tone. This is just a styling guide: your taste comes first. Compare combinations in the Solstice Ear Stack Builder.

How do I clean my piercing jewellery?

If the jewellery has been removed, clean it with lukewarm water and a little mild soap, then rinse and dry it with a clean cloth. Avoid abrasive products.

If you are still wearing the jewellery, use saline solution applied with a clean gauze pad. Avoid cotton wool and cotton buds, which can leave small fibres around the piercing.

Any tips for creating a beautiful ear stack?

Start with a bolder piece in your first piercing, then choose more delicate jewellery for the next ones. You can also play with lengths, for example a hoop, a chain in the middle, then a small stud.

Finally, echo shapes, stones or details across your jewellery to keep your ear stack harmonious.

Why choose titanium rather than 925 silver or stainless steel?

Hypoallergenic and nickel-free, our titanium is laboratory-tested. It resists oxidation and the dark tarnishing associated with silver, helping it retain its shine over time, including when worn in the shower, during exercise or at the beach.

Is the piercing jewellery sold individually?

Choose piercing jewellery individually to build your ear stack freely. For earrings, check the product page to see whether the design is sold individually or as a pair.

Can I wear your jewellery to sleep?

Yes, in a healed piercing and if the jewellery remains comfortable, particularly flat-back studs, which may feel less noticeable when you sleep on them. You can also sleep with a ring if it fits comfortably. Both are made from titanium, a material that can help reduce the risk of irritation or a sensation of heat, but comfort depends on the fit and pressure on your ear.

Can I shower or exercise wearing your jewellery?

Yes. Our jewellery is made from titanium, a material that does not rust and is highly resistant to tarnishing.

It also has our EverGold coating, designed to help preserve its shine and colour over time, including with everyday wear.

What are the different types of ear piercing?

You may already have your lobes, helix or tragus pierced: these are familiar ear piercing placements. But there are plenty of other ways to build an ear stack.

    Helix and forward helix

A helix piercing sits along the outer rim of the ear cartilage. An upper helix is higher on the ear, while a lower helix sits closer to the lobe.

A forward helix piercing sits at the front of that rim, close to your head. Like the helix, it can offer space for more than one piece, depending on your anatomy.

    Tragus and anti-tragus

A tragus piercing sits in the small flap of cartilage beside the ear canal.

The anti-tragus sits opposite the tragus, just above the lobe. It is a less familiar placement that can add a distinctive detail to an ear stack.

    Daith

A daith piercing sits in the small inner cartilage fold above the ear canal. Its tucked-away position brings a different shape to your ear stack.

    Conch

A conch piercing adds contrast and variety to an ear stack. It sits in the bowl of cartilage opposite the ear canal. You may hear placements described as inner conch, towards the centre, or outer conch, nearer the helix.

    Rook

A rook piercing sits in the inner cartilage ridge above the daith. Although sometimes confused with the forward helix, it is a different placement. The shape and fit of its jewellery should suit your anatomy.

    Snug

A snug piercing crosses the raised inner cartilage ridge, facing the ear canal near the conch and helix. It is an unusual placement that adds another layer to a composition.

    Flat

A flat piercing sits on the flatter area of upper ear cartilage, below the helix. It gives a decorative stud space to stand out.

    Lobe

The lobe piercing sits in the soft lower part of the ear. This is the familiar home of the earring, and a natural starting point for an ear stack.

Which type of jewellery should you choose?

Your existing piercings, their fit and your personal style help guide the choice. Hoops, studs, chains, horseshoes and barbells each bring something different.

    Ear piercing hoops

An ear piercing hoop brings curves and dimension to your ear. Choose a smooth, fine hoop for a simple outline, or explore twisted and textured designs. Other styles feature small, sparkling cubic zirconia stones. Many hoops have a click closure, and suitable designs can carry a little pendant or piercing charm.

Depending on your anatomy, the jewellery dimensions and whether the piercing has healed, hoops may suit these placements. Ask your piercer to check the fit:

    • Helix
    • Forward helix
    • Tragus
    • Anti-tragus
    • Lobe
    • Conch
    • Daith
    • Rook

A horseshoe can be an alternative if you prefer a bolder look.

    Piercing studs

Studs bring a smaller decorative detail to an ear stack. A stud combines a post with an end or backing; check each product for its fastening type. The decorative end might be a moon, heart, flower, tiny crystal design or simple gold-tone ball.

Studs can add a delicate touch to these placements when the dimensions and design are suitable:

    • Helix
    • Tragus
    • Lobe
    • Flat
    • Conch

    Chains

Ear chains bring movement and depth to a composition. Piercing chains can connect pieces on the lobe and cartilage, such as the helix or sometimes the conch. Check whether a design is a chain attachment or includes the earrings shown.

    Curved barbells

A curved barbell has a curved bar with ends that may unscrew, depending on the design. Simple styles have small balls, while others feature decorative ends. They are often associated with snug and rook piercings; check the individual product and fit.

When can you change your jewellery?

Wait until your piercing has fully healed before changing it for decorative jewellery. Our articles explain the subject, and your professional piercer can assess whether your piercing is ready.

Our catalogue jewellery is intended for healed piercings, not for the initial piercing procedure.

    Which colour should you choose?

Start with the tones you enjoy wearing.

If you love warm reflections, explore our gold-tone piercing jewellery. Its colour is neither overly yellow nor orange, making it easy to pair with your favourite pieces.

For cooler reflections, discover our silver-tone piercing jewellery. This understated colour lets shape and detail come through. These terms describe the finish colour, not solid precious metal.

    Which size do you need?

The right size depends on your anatomy, placement and healing stage. For a hoop, check the inner diameter. For a stud, distinguish the wearable post length from its thickness. Compare with jewellery that already fits comfortably and ask your piercer to confirm the fit.

Find reference measurements for the lobe, helix, conch, tragus, rook, daith, flat, forward helix and snug in our size guide by placement. Your piercer determines the dimensions needed for an initial piercing.

How can you style your ear stack?

At Solstice, we love combining ear jewellery. A curated ear is simply a selection of pieces that work together in your own way. Here are a few ideas to explore.

    Your style and personality

Let the details you enjoy guide your choices.

For a discreet look, try small, simple studs and fine silver-tone or gold-tone hoops. Add a stone-set hoop whenever you want a little sparkle.

If you prefer a bolder look, combine larger or brighter pieces. A chain can add movement without changing the character of your stack.

Match your jewellery to your clothes and the season

Vary shapes and colours with your outfits or the time of year, if you enjoy changing your style.

In winter, you might choose cooler silver-tone, white-gold-coloured or dark accents. Smaller studs and hoops can balance heavier layers, with a crystal detail for a little light.

In summer, try warmer gold tones, larger earrings or more colourful accents with lighter clothes. Mix chains, textured hoops and sparkling stones. These are styling ideas, not material claims: check each product description for its actual metal, finish and stones.

How do you combine several pieces?

The lobe and cartilage offer different spaces for a stack, depending on your piercings and anatomy.

Contrast is a useful starting point. Try 2 to 4 different pieces, pairing a hoop with a stud and varying their shapes. There is no compulsory formula or number.

White, dark or colourful stones can add another point of interest.

Helix and conch jewellery can complement each other, as can daith and tragus pieces. A rook can pair with a helix or conch, while a snug can sit alongside a daith. If your existing piercings and anatomy allow, a lobe or helix area can accommodate a composition of 2 to 5 pieces.
